About our school...

Our school is located on Northwestern State University's campus in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

NSU Elementary Lab School is K-5.

Our school has a unique chemistry that allows us to be a part of both the Natchitoches Parish Public School System and Northwestern State University.

Our teachers are master teachers that serve as models for the Northwestern State University College of Education Methods students and observers.

NSU Elementary Lab school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. What can accreditation mean for students? Students who attend a school accredited by NCA CASI or SACS CASI can rest assured that the school is committed to raising student performance and held accountable for improving student learning on a continual basis.

Accreditation means that students have:

Qualified teachers who are continually working to improve their practices and teaching methods in order to increase student performance
Access to a rich, diverse, and sound curriculum
Access to a range of student activities and support services
Transferability of credits from school to school
Greater access to federal loans, scholarships, post secondary education, and military programs that require accreditation

The school credits that students earn at an NCA CASI/SACS CASI accredited school are recognized by schools, colleges, and universities globally. Through AdvancED's reciprocal agreements with sister accrediting organizations, students can continue their educational goals in the United States or around the world.

School History
In 1884 the Louisiana legislature established its first state-supported teacher-training school in the town of Natchitoches. Although the “Model” laboratory school began in other buildings on campus, its present location was dedicated to the cause of teacher education in 1929. The three-and-one-half story building was named Warren Easton Hall in honor of the Louisiana State Superintendent of Education. When opened, the school was the twelfth largest laboratory school in the nation. From this prestigious beginning the laboratory school served the college and community over the next seventy years.

There are two classes of students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Although there is also a Child Development Center and two Head Start classes located on the site, these programs are not considered to be a part of the laboratory school.

Mrs. Caron Coleman has served as principal of the school since 2008. NSU Elementary Laboratory School continues to serve the university and the community as a site for the implementation of the innovative principles and practices of quality education. The school motto proclaims that this is a school “Where Students Come First!”
