Lakeview High School's Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) is an award winning program, attaining the Distinguished Unit Award for 9 of the past 12 years and the last 4 years in a row.

The program provides citizenship training, aerospace studies, leadership education, and health/wellness training for high school students.

Non-Commissioned Officer, Technical Sergeant Kenny Minchew, who are Natchitoches Parish School Board teachers and Certified by the State of Louisiana. The classroom curriculum includes:

   • Aerospace studies (aviation history, exploration of space, global and cultural studies, aerospace science and financial management)
   • Leadership education (intro to AFJROTC, communication, life skills, and cadet management)
   • Wellness/fitness including baseline fitness evaluations and improvement assessments.

The Lakeview Cadet Group, LA-943, is one of over 900 similar AFJROTC units worldwide and it has been a part of Natchitoches community since 1994. Their mission is to “Develop Citizens of Character Dedicated to Serving their Nation and Community." Lakeview students recognize the opportunities that exist in this challenging and rewarding program, with 33% of the Lakeview students becoming cadets. Cadets are given the opportunity to gain discipline, leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills through involvement In extracurricular activities, including: parades, color guard, drill teams, marksmanship, field studies, community/school service, a formal military ball, quarterly awards and recognition programs, the Veterans Day program, Annual Awards Ceremony, Honor Flight Field Day, and Cadet Leadership Courses (offered during the summer to selected cadets).

The cadet corps routinely averages over 2,500 school/community service hours per year (almost 20 hours per cadet). Lakeview cadets annually perform over 40 color guard performances, march in 6 parades, compete in state-wide drill/physical fitness meets, and complete a 3-day, out-of-state, curriculum in action trips.

Participation in AFJROTC does not commit or obligate any student to military service. However, a cadet that successfully completes the required years of instruction may qualify for advanced rank upon enlistment into a branch of the Armed Services, compete more favorably for 4-year college ROTC scholarships, and have an increased chance for an appointment to one of the service academies.
